Carolina Wren Champlevé Pendant
5-Day Enameling Workshop
In this five-day intensive workshop, students will create a Carolina Wren pendant using
champlevé and cloisonné enameling techniques on fine silver. This class is designed for students
with basic metalsmithing or enameling experience who want to refine fabrication skills and
develop more nuanced, naturalistic enamel surfaces.
Students will begin by sawing out and fusing a fine silver base, then solder a finding before
enameling begins. Cloisonné wires will be fabricated and carefully bent to follow the design, and
fine silver foil will be textured and applied to create depth in the background areas.
A significant focus of the workshop will be on enamel application—layering, blending, and firing
strategies that build luminous color and subtle transitions. The class will conclude with grinding,
stoning, and polishing techniques to achieve a refined, gem-like finish.
By the end of the workshop, each student will complete a Carolina Wren pendant and gain a
deeper understanding of how structure, texture, and color work together in advanced enamel
design.
Sandra is one of the two Visiting Enamel Goddesses I have invited for 2026 in the spirit of bringing the best enamelists to my studio and I am delighted to announce that you will have an opportunity to study with her this Autumn in my Santa Cruz Studio. This is a unique opportunity to spend five entire days with the Queen of Champlevé to guide you through the completed silver cloisonné Carolina Wren project
